Zach Miller has become known for his no-holds-barred approach to racing, going hard from the gun and finishing all-out. The 28-year-old runner, who manages (and lives in) the Barr Camp cabin on the flanks of Pikes Peak in Manitou Springs, Colorado has won California’s Lake Sonoma 50, Maryland’s JFK 50 and The North Face Endurance Challenge 50 San Francisco.
In 2015, he became the first American male to win the CCC, a 100K sister race to the world-famous Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, a 166K race around the Mont-Blanc Massif.
No American male has ever won the UTMB, which has traditionally been dominated by European runners. Last year, Miller finished sixth, with fellow American runner Tim Tollefson finishing third. This year, Miller, Tollefson and a cohort of other strong American runners return to Chamonix in hopes of gunning for the win.
This video by Billy Yang explores Miller’s thoughts leading into the race.
