Jennifer Kyle didn’t always run because she loved it. Running was a chore—a way to burn calories and lose weight. Over time, though, it’s morphed into a vital part of her daily routine, a mental and emotional escape from the stress of daily life.
Kyle has now run four marathons, and is currently training for her fifth—the Chicago Marathon. Trail Runner caught up with her to learn about running (and wine drinking) in California.
What is your most memorable race experience?
My first marathon, the California International Marathon, is where I qualified for the Boston Marathon. It was a magical day in that qualifying for Boston and completing my first marathon were both things I never really thought I could do until I crossed the finish line. My family, friends and boyfriend were all there, so I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
What motivates you to take on a challenging run or daunting goal?
I love challenging myself to do something that I have never physically done before. Setting my sights on a goal, breaking it down into smaller steps and then working my way through those steps to achieve the goal is so much fun. Writing a training plan for a new training cycle for my next race is one of my favorite things to do.
What is your favorite part about living and running in Marin, California?
My favorite thing about Marin is that you can be in completely different climates and terrain pretty quickly. In San Francisco I can be right on the bay and in the fog; nearby Mt. Tamalpais offers some beautiful views; the Marin headlands are great for hill work; and wine country isn’t too far away when it is time for a celebratory toast post-run!
What is your favorite post-run treat?
I love a good burger and a glass of wine. A chocolate chip cookie never hurts either.
What is your go-to running song?
Animal by The Seige
If you could run with any singer/musician/band (dead or alive) who would it be?
I would really like for Taylor Swift to follow me on a Segway singing that new song, Look What You Made Me Do. I didn’t want to like it, but it is so catchy.
