A year after Rickey Gates ran across the United States, he took on a new challenge. To understand a different type of wilderness—the wilderness we all experience everyday, yet easily overlook (the town or city where we live)—he decided to run every street in San Francisco. While only seven miles wide by seven miles long, San Francisco is jam-packed with streets, people, elevation changes, culture, incredible wealth, extreme poverty, history and change.
“Personally, running every single street in San Francisco gave me a completely different appreciation for the place I’ve called home,” Gates explained. “It provided me with empathy for my neighbors who have less than me and more understanding of how a population works on both a micro and macro scale.”
Take a moment to watch this 18-minute film produced by Salomon TV and reconsider your own definition of wilderness, the place you call home and what it might be like to run every single street.
