When Kilian Jornet, master alpine athlete and likely the best trail runner in the world, heads out for a long day, it “could be 50, 80, 100 or 150 hours,” says Jornet. He puts on his pack and runs out his door to the mountains near his home in Romsdalen, Norway.

Jornet, and many mountain athletes, are blurring the lines more and more between trail running and technical climbing—creating advanced adventure routes through diverse and jagged landscapes.

Even if you don’t live among fjords and stunning summits, what can you do out your backdoor? What adventures await you with light gear, a light budget and a taste for adventure?
