The Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) is one of the most prestigious trail races in the world, attracting over 2,000 racers and a highly competitive elite field year after year.
But as big as UTMB itself is, it’s only one part of a weeklong series of races based in and around Chamonix, France. One of its “sister races,” the 119-kilometer TDS (which stands for the mouthful “Sur les Traces des Ducs de Savoie”) runs perhaps two-thirds of the way around Mont Blanc, gaining 7,250 meters (over 23,700 feet) along the way.
Earlier this week, trail runner and filmmaker Andrew Drummond set out to capture this epic companion to UTMB, and came away with these scenes from the race.
