After more than a decade of road and track success—including a 2008 appearance in the Olympic Marathon—Magdalena Boulet transitioned to trail ultras a few years ago, and has since put together a string of impressive first-place finishes at competitive races, including last year’s Western States 100, her debut 100-miler.

In this video, by filmmaker Billy Yang, Boulet reflects on running and racing, as well as what being an American means to her—her family moved to California from when Boulet was in high school, and she became an American citizen on September 11, 2001.
