A few years ago, Brett Rivers left his job at Zynga, the company behind Words With Friends and FarmVille, to open a running store. The Bay Area, long a hotbed of trail-running talent, had no home store to support, and Rivers, dissatisfied with his job in the tech industry, wanted to open his own business. It was a perfect match.

Over the past two years, the San Francisco Running Company has become a home base for the Mill Valley running community—elites, mid-pack runners and newbies alike. Rivers has been scoring personal victories as well, including a top-ten finish at last year’s Western States Endurance Run. In this video, by Billy Yang films, Rivers offers a glimpse into his busy life as husband, father, athlete, community figure and small-business owner, and shares his advice for other runners wishing to make a life out of their passion for the sport.
