A dream trip to the land of volcanoes and rainforests, in photos (sponsored)

Last fall, Bill Clements, an amateur trail runner from California, went on the adventure of a lifetime: a three-day, coast-to-coast traverse of Hawaii’s Big Island with trail-running pros Jason Schlarb and Julien Chorier, arranged by Julbo.

The trip’s genesis goes back to last year’s Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB), a trail ultra that starts and ends in Chamonix, France. After finishing the challenging race, Clements won a drawing held by Julbo and was chosen for the trip.

A few months later, Clements stood next to Schlarb and Chorier in the volcanic moonscape of Hawaii’s austere Kau Desert, preparing himself for the 155 miles they would cover in the next three days. This gallery documents their adventures through a stunning diversity of landscapes, from 13,000-foot volcanoes devoid of vegetation to beaches and overgrown rainforests.
