The Trail Runner Trophy Series, presented by Altra Running, is a points-based, season-long series of more than 200 trail races around the country. This year’s Trophy Series has two grand prizes. The runner with the most miles at season’s end will win a trail-running tour beginning in Chamonix, France, led by Run the Alps, and the runner who finishes the most races will end up on the cover of an issue of Trail Runner.
With the series in full swing, here are some of the latest stories from the last couple weeks. Dale Reichender, 50, of Malibu, California, has taken over the lead to be our cover model with 10 races. The race to win that dream vacation continues to be neck-and-neck, with four runners tied at 200 miles!
Tanglewood Tanglefoot Trail Run: Elmira, New York, June 19
The Tanglewood Tanglefoot is one of only a few races that’s been a part of the Trophy Series since its inception a dozen years ago.
This year, the 13th annual race was on a 6.5-mile loop that racers circumnavigated once for the 10K and twice for the 20K, each loop leading off with a quick 400-foot climb.
Course records fell in both the men’s and women’s 20K races—even more impressive, new men’s record-holder Brendan Glover covered the first half of his 20K faster than the men’s 10K winner! Nora McIver-Sheridan won the women’s 20K for the second year running, taking two minutes off her previous best time. (McIver-Sheridan then went on to set a new course record at the Finger Lakes 50K on July 2.)
Race director Jim Chely made sure recovery beers were flowing when racers came off the warm, dry course.
Waugoshance Trail Marathon: Emmet County, Michigan, July 9
The Waugoshance Trail Marathon and Half showcased some of Michigan’s best singletrack miles and bluffs, hosting 205 runners from 26 states and four countries.
The performance of the day came in the women’s half marathon, with 2015 world 50K champion and 50-Mile road world record holder Camille Herron’s 1:40:05. Not only did she crush the women’s competition, she beat the first male finisher by two minutes for the overall win.
Herron used the half as a tune-up race to prep for the White River 50-Miler later this month, says race director Jeff Crumbaugh. When she’s not winning races and setting records, Herron studies bone-tissue microstructure.
