Black Diamond Stretch Fineline Shell
This is a go-to layer for alpine adventures. It’s light, packable and ready to weather any squall. Stretchy, movable fabric and underarm gussets let you move freely, and waterproof membrane keeps the jacket from soaking through. I stash this layer in my pack for alpine ascents and scrambles when tough weather is a guarantee.
Smith Uproar Chromapop Sunglasses
These shades work in any light and any situation. Polarized lenses work great in changing light conditions and performance nose-pads keep these shades from bouncing or sliding on the go. Interchangeable lenses let you customize the look for your situation and sport, while a slightly rounded lense makes these sporty shades casual enough to grab a post-run beer (corona willing). These are versatile and durable, and let you add performance optics to your everyday outfit.
La Sportiva Jackal
The La Sportiva Jackal is an ultra-oriented shoe ready for mountain adventures. At 8.8 oz for the women’s edition and 10.5 for the men’s, it’s light enough to feel zippy without sacrificing the cushioning you need for long-distance adventures. A 25mm stack height gives this shoe substantial cushion and support without sacrificing too much trail feel. A 7mm drop feels supportive without being too aggressive, and it’s a pretty perfect sweet spot for runs 50k and up. Men’s version here.
Hydrapak Ultraflask
These flasks are durable and collapsible, and seem to fit best in the greatest number of vests (as a vest tester – these are my go-to! Many brands use Hydrapak’s flasks to stock their own vests). The bite seal is easy to use, and even easier to clean (I recommend using Bottle Bright to keep your flasks and bottles in ship shape). These are quick and easy to refill at aid stations (remember aid stations?!) or in streams. You can stash an empty one in a pack or vest to fill along the way, or start fully loaded with two of Hydrapak’s 600ml flasks.
Salomon XA Filter Cap
This is a must-have for the backcountry runner. This fits in any Salomon/Hydrapak flask (see above) and lets you grab water on the go. You can fill any flask, and then drink worry-free from this easy to use filter. I’ve been taking this on any trip where running out of water is even a remote possibility in the high country, and like it more than most water filtration/purification systems because it’s instantly drinkable.
Honey Stinger Protein Waffles
Two thin Stroop waffles filled with fruity protein goodness are the perfect post-run snack. With 10g of protein and 150 calories, this is a great bite to tide you over in between meals and aid with recovery. These waffles are a great and ultra-portable alternative to sticky sweet shakes and smoothies and can be stashed in your desk or gym bag.
