Topo Athletic has updated the Hydroventure to feature deeper, more widely spaced lugs for better traction in mud or over slippery terrain. Designed for those gray, long days when you don’t want to get outside, or mucky sloshy races, the Hydroventure 2 (men’s version here) has a single-layer waterproof upper, gusseted tongue and a forefoot rock plate.
Gaining a bit of weight since its predecessor, likely due to the increased lug depth, it’s still on the light end of the burly/waterproof spectrum. The Vibram Megagrip outsole performed well on all terrain and reviewers gave high marks for advanced responsiveness, agility and comfort.
Tester-monial: “This shoe was a perfect choice for my 100-mile fun run because it performs well in a variety of road and trail conditions. It’s stable enough for a technical descent at night or some cross-country bushwhacking and light and cushioned enough for flat miles on asphalt.” —Stephanie Ehret, Boulder, Colorado
