Salomon XR Crossmax
$130, 11.3 oz, www.salomonrunning.com
The Dirt. The first hybrid trail shoe by Salomon, the XR Crossmax features Contagrip, Salomon’s sticky-rubber outsole, which testers agreed, offered great traction on off-road terrain (except in wet conditions) without feeling clunky on the road. This model employs Salomon’s new OS Tendon technology, a flexing spine along the undersole, which testers said provided excellent stability, and comes in both neutral and stability versions. A soft foam layer sits under the forefoot as a crash pad for landing, which felt soft and shock-absorbent.
Fit. Featuring Salomon’s trademark quick-lace system, this shoe fits snuggly around the midfoot, but is a bit boxy in the toe. Runs slightly long and fits best on medium- to high-volume feet.
Best For. The Crossmax is light enough for short runs and durable enough for long training days on moderately technical trails and roads.
