Sometimes sequels can meaningfully improve on the original, and the Hoka Torrent 2 is more Godfather II than Attack of the Clones. This is a Hoka for people who haven’t always been fans of Hoka’s maximalist cushioning and feel.
The Torrent 2 is a light and nimble single-track crusher with just enough cushion to go the distance without sacrificing weight or stability. The Torrent feels different from many Hoka models, with minimal cushioning and stiffer midsole that makes for a springy, speedy feel underfoot.
A 26mm stack height and 5mm drop make this shoe born to shred the single-track. The Profly midsole makes for a springy toe-off, giving this shoe a zippier feel than other Hoka counterparts. There’s enough squish for comfy landings and plenty of zip for powerful take-offs without the weight. Just short of being a racing flat, the Torrent’s geometry and lightweight build lend it to pushing the pace no matter the terrain.
Though it doesn’t have a rock plate, the midsole felt protective and supportive enough on rocky l terrain. There is enough midsole and outsole to protect the feet even on techy trail. Multidirectional lugs make for quick and efficient braking and climbing on a variety of surfaces. The upper is made from light and breathable engineered mesh (that incorporates some recycled materials) that fit my narrow feet quite well (though the generous toe box will also allow for a wider foot, too).
The low-profile, low-weight and snappy responsiveness of the Torrent make it perfect for single-track speed sessions and shorter trail races. This shoe is right at home in any runner seeking for speed on the trail’s lineup. I’d recommend the torrent to anyone looking for a light and fast shoe that’s just substantial enough to be comfortable and protective.
