Rock plate: Yes
Fit: True to size
The lightest weight of our spring-shoe round-up, the Superior 4 (women’s version here) is being called “the slipper” by our review team. It’s comfortable, just aggressive enough, durable and breathable. The new Quantic midsole by Altra is a bit softer for more forgiveness on uneven surfaces and an improved road ride on the way to the trail.
The new upper is seamless up to the toes, limiting hotspots. Probably best for distances under 50K, the Superior is also a bit narrower than other Altra models. This is a great all-around trail runner and an excellent model to try if you’re new to the Altra family.
Tester-monial: “The rockplate has been made thinner and more flexible and works really well in providing protection without taking away from the responsiveness. The toe-bumper drains work amazingly well, and the narrow heel platform makes the shoe nimble and responsive.” —Lou Brenner, Polson, Montana
