Looking for a fantastic high-country race to round out your summer? Well, consider breathing in Colorado’s fresh mountain air in the new Power of Four 50K, organized by Aspen Skiing Company. Originally only offering a mountain bike and ski-mountaineering race, Aspen/Snowmass will be adding a 50K trail run to their growing Power of Four series.
Scheduled for August 4, the 2013 race will tour four of the most scenic and sought-after mountains in the high country. Beginning at the foot of Aspen Mountain, runners will follow their gazes up toward the Sundeck Lodge, where they’ll traverse single- and doubletrack trails across Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass. The ultra will finish at Snowmass Base Village, the heart of the mountain’s famous ski resort.
“It will offer an amazing backcountry feel to both competitive and recreational trail runners,” says John Rigney, Vice President of Sales and Events at Aspen Skiing Company.
For team players out there, the race will also feature a relay category, comprising teams of two. The first leg will stretch from the bottom of Aspen Mountain to the base of Tiehack lift, and the second from the base of Tiehack to the finish in Snowmass.
If you’re looking for a worthy cross-training event, be sure to check out the Power of Four Mountain Bike Race—also covering all four mountains—scheduled for August 3—and if you’re really ambitious, consider taking on both!
50K online registration will close August 1 at 5 p.m., with on-site registration offered August 2 (no race-day registration available). Early-bird discounts apply until July 28.
