The Dirt: Marking Speedo’s entry into the trail-running market, the amphibious FST is designed as a multi-purpose shoe for trail runs, adventure races, triathlons and more. Extremely flexible—“like a ballet flat,” said one tester—and lacking a rock plate, it offers a minimal, close-to-ground feel.
Perfect for trails with creek crossings, the mesh upper and midsole/outsole drainage ports promote quick drying. (On the flipside, in the rain, your feet will get wet.)
With a seamless construction and washable insoles, the FST can be worn with or without socks.
Best For: Non-technical runs or races of up to an hour or two—or for working on running technique and foot strengthening.
Traction: The shallow Vibram nodules perform best on dry trails. While they also grip wet rock well, the absence of a rock plate doesn’t suit the FST to technical terrain in mucky weather.
Fit: The shoe runs slightly long and narrow.
The Downsides: The slippery, round laces come untied easily.
