Despite its bulky appearance, the Salomon Snowcross is surprisingly lightweight. According to Salomon, “the Snowcross is for people who keep running even when the postman stays in.” Indeed, the winterized shoe boasts nine metal spikes, an above-ankle zip gaiter and a Climashield upper, a water-resistant material that keeps feet dry in sloppy winter conditions.
The seamless upper has welded overlays that reduce weight while providing structure to the mid-foot. An elastic cuff prevents snow and debris from entering the shoe. Plus, the Salomon trademark Quicklace system is easy to evenly adjust. And a zipper shield protects the zipper from freezing.
Best For: Winter running, specifically in snow. Don’t let looks deceive you: the Snowcross is surprisingly light and nimble, making them a good winter race-day shoe, especially if you will encounter snow, ice or sopping-wet trails.
Traction: Thanks to the multi-directional, deep V-shaped lugs and built-in spikes, the shoe offered stellar traction in icy and snowy conditions.
Fit: Universal. The Snowcross offers the typical foot-hugging fit you’ve come to expect from Salomon.
The Downsides: The shoes comes at a steep price—it’s a shame you can only wear it in inclement winter weather.
