Sneak Peek: March 2013 Trail Runner

Legends of the trail, adventure in Hells Canyon and the running community in Missoula

For many of us, training through the winter can be a grind. Short daylight hours, cold, lung-burning air, slippery snow and ice and the bustle of the holidays may throw us off our game. As we look forward to spring, though, we carry with us the mental fortitude we (hopefully) forged throughout the winter.

In the March 2013 issue of Trail Runner, we celebrate just that: the tenacity of runners who find new grinds to tackle year-round. In Adventure, Steve Graepel recounts his epic run through Hells Canyon with Mike James—strangers when they began, friends when they emerged 36 hours later and a few cactus spines richer from North America’s deepest canyon.

In Legends of the Trail, we highlight eight stars of the sport, from the legendary record-smasher Ann Trason to the enigmatic, 100-mile pioneering runner Gordy Ainsleigh, to the original American mountain runner Chuck Smead, to modern-day sensation Kilian Jornet.

We’re all looking for that trail-running Mecca, to feel part of a tribe, and in The Zoo, Rachel Toor reveals what caused the now-thriving running community in Missoula, Montana, to gel.

In For the Hell of It, read about one runner’s motivations for a 90-mile odyssey across Death Valley: a desire to slow down, feel the desert and experience it all from ground level, one step at a time—and to have a party with old friends.

To help you meet new challenges this spring, in Trail Tips, we share a slew of ways to keep your mind fresh, fueled and sharp on the trails. And, in Trail Tested, we review six new trail-ready hydration systems.

Happy Trails,

The Trail Runner Crew
