Salomon Fellraiser (Fall 2013)
10.2 oz | 6mm drop | $110 | salomon.com
The Dirt: Inspired by the mucky conditions of the UK’s fell-running scene, the Fellraiser’s signature traits are its 7mm-deep lugs that chew up muddy and waterlogged trails like bear claws.
Ortholite foam, an EVA heel cup and a padded ankle cuff provide an especially cushy ride, given the shoe’s light weight—“noticeable and welcome on long descents,” said one tester.
The signature Salomon quick-lace system allows easy on and off.
Best For: Rugged, off-road running adventures of any distance. Stay off the pavement, as the lugs are like soccer cleats.
Traction: Several dozen angular, chevron-shaped lugs offer outstanding bite and braking control on steep, muddy trails.
Fit: The Fellraiser runs about a half-size long, with a narrow heel and medium-width forefoot.
The Downsides: While it handles mud and water well, it’s slow to shed them, too; the shoe can feel a bit heavy after running long in sloppy conditions.
Tester-Monial: “The Fellraiser is like having four-wheel drive for your feet!” –Tom Morton, Chicopee, MA
